First Tattoo in Bali: What to Expect

Published 15 April 2026 by Enzo

Getting your first tattoo is a significant decision, and doing it in Bali adds an extra layer of excitement (and maybe some extra nerves). The good news: Bali's top studios have tattooed thousands of first-timers and know exactly how to make the experience comfortable and enjoyable.

Before Your Session

  • Choose your studio carefully. Read reviews, check portfolios, and visit the studio in person if possible. Studios like Quiet Ink and Mason's Ink are frequently praised by first-timers.
  • Bring reference images. Even rough ideas help your artist understand what you want. Multiple references showing elements you like are better than one "perfect" image.
  • Plan your timing. Get tattooed at the beginning of your trip so you have time to heal before flying home. Avoid getting tattooed the day before a beach day.
  • Eat well and stay hydrated. A full stomach and good hydration help you handle the session better. Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours beforehand.
  • Wear appropriate clothing. Choose clothes that give easy access to the tattoo area and that you don't mind getting a tiny bit of ink on.

During Your Session

The consultation comes first. Your artist will discuss the design, placement, and sizing. For first-timers, this conversation is crucial: it is your chance to ask questions, voice concerns, and refine the design before anything permanent happens.

The actual tattooing process involves:

  • Stencil placement: the artist transfers the design outline onto your skin so you can see the exact position and size.
  • Approval: you confirm you are happy with the placement. Speak up if anything is not right.
  • Tattooing: the artist works with the machine, building the design line by line. Communication is welcome throughout.
  • Breaks: for longer sessions, breaks are normal and expected. Ask for one whenever you need it.

Pain Expectations

Most first-timers describe the sensation as "uncomfortable but manageable" rather than truly painful. Some comparisons that appear in reviews:

  • Like a persistent scratching or cat scratch sensation
  • Fine line work feels lighter than bold shading
  • Bony areas (ribs, ankles, spine) hurt more than fleshy areas (upper arm, thigh, calf)
  • The first few minutes are the most uncomfortable as your body adjusts

Aftercare in Bali

Your artist will provide specific instructions. General guidelines for healing in Bali's tropical climate:

  • Keep the tattoo clean and apply fragrance-free moisturizer 2 to 3 times daily
  • Stay out of direct sunlight for at least two weeks
  • No ocean, pool, or rice terrace water for two to three weeks
  • Spend time in air-conditioned spaces during the first couple of days to reduce sweating
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing over the tattoo area
  • Do not pick at any scabbing or peeling
